Measuring success

Home-Start places great emphasis on the five outcomes from the Government Green Paper ‘Every Child Matters’ which was developed for the use of all practitioners working with children and families in the wake of the tragic death of the little girl, Victoria Climbi√©. This was a shared programme of change to improve outcomes and to ensure that ALL children had the chance of a better future, whatever their circumstances. We concentrate on achieving these goals in our day-to-day work with our families:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

Out of the families we supported last year, seven parents are now in part-time work, juggling jobs and family commitments, a further three are studying part-time in English, Maths and ICT with another undertaking an Open University course. For single mums on low incomes this is especially hard as their childcare arrangements are by necessity haphazard as they have to rely on friends and family. Despite the struggles, these parents feel good about themselves; they also have a sense of achievement.

It is a continuous challenge to attract, train and retain people who have the necessary parenting skills, experience, dedication and availability to undertake this key role. Many of our families have a number of complex social issues and we need good volunteers who can raise the self-esteem, confidence, coping skills and general parenting skills of our families.
